It has been a couple of weeks since the Sinulog Open Version 4.0 and the high is still alive! Being the first major provincial tournament of the New Year, Sinulog Open didn’t fail to exceed the expectations of the people. This year’s tournament had 20 teams that represented not only Cebu, but also the different provinces around the island, from the neighboring island of Negros, to Bohol, all the way up to the Bicol province. It was also filled with many of the country’s Ultimate idols including Dada Libo-on, Khyrra Tuvilla, Jessica Resch and Botchok Onlayao to name a few.
Not only was it my first tournament of the year – it was also my first tournament in Cebu! You could say that I had a greater level of excitement for that particular weekend. As I crossed from Negros to Cebu a day before the tournament, the weather had already started to go against our favor and dark clouds were piling over the island. Unfortunately, the weather worsened during the captain’s meeting at Manggahan where the rain started to pour like crazy! We were all informed that the first field was badly affected by the rain, but that didn’t stop the players from giving out their best when the first day of games started despite the wet fields and layers of mud.
By the second day, the energy level was raised. All the teams were in their respective pools, battling out for a shot at the championships. In the end, the finals for the three pools were against Bicol Ultimate and Friends and Irbus for Pool C, UGA and Warriors Ultimate for Pool B and Fasa Fuego and Thunderclap for Pool A.
All eyes were on Fasa and TC where scores were neck-on-neck. Muddy layouts, high skies, great defense and great offense were witnessed from both teams leading to a much awaited universal point in which Fasa Fuego scored to their victory. In the end, it was all smiles and most importantly, the Spirit of the Game.
The tournament, I believe I speak for all of the players, was a success. Cheers to the organizers of the event, the teams who played hard and partied even harder! Daghang Salamat, Cebu! Till the next Sinulog Open!
