Seven On The Line With Jasmin Ariola
As most Ultimate players are struggling and working hard to be great. To jump higher. To run faster. Working on their throws and their team plays, Jasmin Ariola is doing everything she can with the help of her teammates to fit in and be part of this great community.
A deaf/mute since 2 years old, this amazing young athlete from Olongapo is breaking all the odds. From joining beauty pageants, playing football, and now working her way to be one of the best young female athletes in Central Luzon, being deaf/mute is hard. Trying to understand and be understood by others is an everyday struggle for Jasmin. But life became so much easier because of her very supportive boyfriend and team, Team Minions. They helped her with everything that she needs to know and understand on and off the field. The team even tried to learn how to use sign language so they can communicate with each other.
She never felt alone. And it only shows that Ultimate is definitely for EVERYONE!
Jasmin Ariola is on the hot seat today to answer the seven questions!
Thank you, Jasmin!
1. Who is Jasmin Ariola?
I am Jasmin S. Ariola, 20 years old. I am deaf-mute. My hobbies are playing Ultimate Frisbee and Soccer, and I have received awards like Mythical 7 and MVP in tournaments in these sports. I also love joining pageants. I won 2nd runner-up in Miss Teen Zambales last 2015. I also have a collaboration with my sister, selling clothes online (Facebook and Instagram). I am also looking forward to studying in CCA Manila, a school for deaf and non-deaf, as a student-athlete scholar. I dream to be a chef and continue our family business in the future. Being deaf is not easy yet I am thankful in life. I enjoy life by creating memories with my family and friends.
2. When did you start playing Ultimate?
I started playing Ultimate Frisbee last 2014. I’ve been playing for almost 5 years now.
3.What do you do when you are not playing Ultimate?
I often hang out with my friends who are also deaf, but most of the time, I hangout with my boyfriend.
4. What made you fall in love with Ultimate?
I was willing to join Ultimate Frisbee when my boyfriend invited me because my brother used to play, too. I did not expect that I will love this sport as much as I love myself. It became the sport that I love the most. The trainings are hard, but if you love it it’s easy. I also love my teammates. They are like my family. They are so kind to me and they are willing to learn sign language just to communicate with me. Or pwede show sa phone. My boyfriend also inspires me to play and strive more in the said sport.
5. Who inspires you? And who are the important people in your life?
I inspire myself in everything in my life, loving my sports and my hobbies. My boyfriend. He was the one who asked me to join this sport. Of course, my family. They give me strength. And my friends who are one of a kind, always supporting me.
6. What are the challenges when you are playing ultimate and other sports?
Because I am deaf-mute, sometimes it is hard for me to play. I cannot hear anything. I cannot hear what my teammates are saying, so I just try to read what they are saying through their lips. It is hard to talk to those who don’t know how to use sign language. They are still learning so I just try to understand and be patient with them.
7. What is your message for young athletes like you?
Do what makes you happy. Value the sport you are playing as much as you value yourself. Sports can lead you to success even at a young age. Enjoy!
