Tubigon Lambay Ultimate Frisbee Tournament 2019. A promising years to come!
For the second
straight year, we were back in the humble town of Tubigon, Bohol for the 2nd
Lambay Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Last year was just the beginning of what this
town is capable of doing for the community of our beloved sport.
The First
Tubigon Lambay Ultimate Tournament is a brainchild of the Frisbee community in
the Town of Tubigon in celebration of its annual town fiesta. It plans to be a
yearly sports event where teams from all over the country can participate and
compete. Tubigon, a 1st class municipality of Bohol is well-known for its
abundance of the mouthwatering blue crabs called Lambay. Hence, the tournament
name was derived. The tournament aims to promote Ultimate Frisbee as a premier
sport and to provide an avenue for sports development highlighting the spirit of
the game, camaraderie, and friendship among players and participants. With 28
teams from all over the country, they did a great job in making Lambay Ultimate
as one of the most successful tournaments this year.
Hon. Delia Lasco filed a resolution and
ordinance declaring Lambay Ultimate Frisbee tournament as Tubigon's Sport
Tourism activity and should be held annually with budget appropriations. She
cited the economic activity and impact of frisbee tournaments in the town
as well as the youth and sports development. It’s definitely quite rare and
impressive to see a local government with this kind of support towards the
sport. All of these will never be possible without the determination and
sacrifices of Tournament organizer, Emil Valzado who tirelessly working for
months to make this three-day tournament possible.
If we have Cabalen Ultimate Open in Luzon as
one of the most successful tournaments after its debut year (from 8 teams to 24
the next year), Lambay Ultimate is the counterpart of CUO in the Visayas.
Debuted in 2018 with 16 teams to 28 teams this year with some of the strongest
individuals showcasing their talents in the fields of Tubigon. Two venues were
prepared to cater the 28 teams, Tubigon West Central Oval Field and Bohol
Island State University. Just like most of the tournaments, the games started
slow, but you can definitely feel the excitement in the air.
This year’s Lambay was scheduled for three
days, so the organizers need to do something to entertain their guests. They
managed to have a Movie night on Day 1, a bunch of local bands played on Day 2,
and who can forget the Day 3/Awarding shenanigans where the teams were treated
with an epic performance from Dumaguete’s rap group, Midnasty, rapping the
night away with some of the groups popular tracks. It was definitely a 200%
upgrade from last year.
The finals Day (Day 3) was without a doubt the
day that everyone was waiting for. With 4 championship games happening all in
one day, the participants are in for a treat. When you think that the lower
pool games will not be as entertaining as Pool A, you were wrong. The lower
pools are rocking their championship games.
As the dust cleared the air for a few seconds
after the lower pools made their presence known, the Pool A finals between Fasa
Fuego and the Undefeated Emiltimate was about to begin. The crowd gathered on
the sides of the playing field, expecting a killer show. As Bruno, Oyok,
Wilson, and the rest of the team from Cebu looking forward to scoring an upset,
the Bohol based team that was mostly composed of players from Iligan were
determined to end the tournament with a clean slate record. The first pull was
up. And so was the dust. The battle commences.
It was a close game at first. Fasa Fuego went
out controlling the first few points of the game, on their way to make that
goal of winning an upset a reality. But if you have Binoy, Alod, Len, Chuby,
Dale, and the rest of the boys and girls from Iligan, coming back from a large
lead was a walk in the park. Emiltimate has a ton of firepower that weekend.
They took the lead, controlled the game and finished the tournament with a zero
loss record. Emiltimate is your 2019 Tubigon Lambay Ultimate Pool A Champions!
There were a lot of fun and intense games that
happened during the weekend in Tubigon. But I think the highlight of the
weekend was the things that the local government had promised to the Ultimate
community of Tubigon. Hearing the projects and future plans in person made me
more excited in what this town has to offer in our community. And I really hope
that all those promises and dreams will become a reality.
