Ultimate Apparel Open 2016

It's my first time in this side of the island, and I've always been wanting to come and visit Puka beach for quite some time now. It's quiet. It's clean. It's... Paradise. The beach was gorgeous and the puka shells all over the place are giving this quieter side of Boracay such beauty. You can just sit under a coconut tree, enjoy a glass of fruit shake and smile all day. It's the best thing that you could do here on the island, anyway. And Puka beach is the best place to do that in my opinion.
The participating teams of the first 5 on 5 beach ultimate tournament in Boracay was fortunate enough to be in this beautiful place last weekend. Big credits to Mr. Junthir Flores and the rest of his crew for choosing this spot for the first ever Ultimate Apparel Open.
From seasoned veteran players to upcoming stars of the sport, the UA Open is full of talents. Though I was honestly expecting more teams joining, the eight open teams and five mixed teams showed some great ultimate Frisbee all throughout the weekend. I couldn't asked for more.

Ultimate Frisbee in Boracay was known for intense, fast paced disc movement, and of course some insane highlights on the beach. But lately they were also known for their younger generation of phenomenal players that soon will dominate the game on sand. With the likes of Justin, AJ, Kobe, JanJan and Nonoy, Philippine Beach Ultimate's future is well taken cared of. These kids are insane!

It was quite nice to see a team from the U.S. participated last weekend. Tim Morrill and his Humiliswag crew ruled the fields of Puka beach in a dominating fashion, winning the Open division final versus the high powered veteran team led by the one and only Xtian Guerrero. But I think the best part of it all was seeing some old friends like Goose Helton, meeting new friends like Bob Lui, Sam Ee, Zi, John of Australia and of course seeing a comeback from one of the original members of the Boracay Dragons Worlds team back in 2007 in Brazil, Clyde Sullano. It was such a treat seeing Clyde, Xtian, Panoy Delos Santos, and Ben Yap all in one team again and showing us hows it's done, old school style.

More games? You asked for it! There are a few teams that had my attention during the UA Open. But, I think the one team that really gave me a good impression (well, only the players who gave their all and played the whole weekend impressed me) was Team Potchi of Iloilo city. They fought hard the whole weekend, participated in both Open and Mixed divisions, and played back to back to back games on the Day 2 due to lack of players. On the third day of the tournament, they had another back to back schedule of games and even played battle for third on the mixed division and played a ranking game for the Open division all at the same time. And of course, partied all night long at Club Summerplace after awarding.
Quoting Xtian Guerrero.... "Mga Baliw kayo!"

Ultimate Apparel Open has a lot of potential to get bigger in the coming years. And I am looking forward to seeing more teams participate and enjoy the beautiful beaches of this beautiful island. Congratulations to Humiliswag and Hot Chilies for winning the Open and Mixed divisions. Huge congratulations to Junthir Flores and the rest of the crew of Ultimate Apparel for a successful 2016 UA Open!

Until Then. More images to share. More Stories to tell... It's All About U!
