Kagay-An 2.0: A Secret Game That Only A Few Of Us Had Witnessed

After seven years, Cagayan De Oro City is back in the Tournament calendar as 18 teams traveled to CDO sports complex to welcome the return of Kagay-an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Kagay-an 1.0 was way back in 2012, and this year CDO home team CGY Ninjas stepped up to the plate in organizing the said Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. But of course, it wouldn't be successful without any mishaps and challenges along the way, especially on the weather situation, where the city was being bombarded by heavy rains and hosted a couple of big festival events, that includes a full packed free concert of Parokya Ni Edgar who crushed the sports complex with hundreds of people. Day 1 of Kagay-an 2.0 was supposed to be a bust due to the unplayable condition of the Sports Complex field, but the organizers did a fantastic job of asking the management for consideration. The SC management agreed to continue the event on a condition that the Kagay-an organizers will take care of the repairs after the tournament and that the players can only play if they will not use their studs/cleats. So it’s either turf, running shoes or bare feet, which the players agreed to the managment’s request... well, some of the players did.

Day 1 ended on a high note, everything went smoothly, the playing fields held off with minimal damage. But nighttime came by and so was the heavy rain came in for a visit to ruin the party. Though some of us still went out for a couple glass of booze, we already knew what's going to happen the next day. As expected the ones hard as a rock playing field was now smooth as melted chocolate. The mud pit was all over the place, it was nasty… and quite a lot of fun really. The daredevils took advantage of the softer fields, as some of them flew in the air like they just don't care (does that sound like a rap rhyme to you?). Bodies were thrown from all over the place down to the dark chocolate mud pit for a few brown splashes of fun. The games were still competitive as ever but the rain managed to come and go all day long, making it really hard for me to shoot the event. But there was no other choice but to suck it up and continue shooting in the rain.

The pool A semifinal games were off the hook. Lots of excitement, tons of action, too many highlights from both pitches. It was really nice to see an elite team in Boracay Bandits supporting tournaments like Kagay-an 2.0. The Bandits came in undefeated prior to the pool A semis, they were paired against a hungry young team, WUF that almost gave the bandits a heart attack in the end. The battle between Boondocks and MB was a game to be remembered as both teams fought hard up to the last point, it was so unpredictable that I don't even know where to set my self up for the game-winning celebration. After the last point was scored under the dark skies of Cagayan De Oro, the Bandits and team MB were set to duke it out for the final game of the tournament. The Pool A Finals.

As much as I would still love to shoot the game, the weather and lighting condition prevented me from doing so. The Pool A finals started between 6:30-7pm, the lighting in CDO SC is too dark for my gear and yes, the rain poured down on us like there was no tomorrow. But the final game continued with slight game-time adjustments where both teams happily agreed on. It was cold, dark and unbelievably wet. All that you can see were shadows of players running up and down the pitch and that one white flying saucer that they kept on throwing in the air for their teammates to chase down in the end zone. Did both teams took it slow for safety? Oh, no they didn't! They went down hard. They were sprinting and going all out for that bid, they were doing that superman thing all game long. And they were not horsing around either, both teams were actually trying to win that heavy wooden trophy. They were going for it. The game was amazing. No FB Lives. No Photos online. No Twitter updates. It was like a secret game that only a few of us were allowed to witness it. While I was writing this right now, that layout bid of Edmar is still in my head. It was one of the farthest layout bids I have ever seen…. he literally flew in the air for quite a while. After a few layout punches were given by both teams, Boracay Bandits went on to score the final point under the pouring rain and went home with the Kagay-an 2.0 championship trophy. (Zero Championship Photos were taken) It was my first time shooting a tournament in Cagayan De Oro City, and though it was unfortunate that I didn't get a chance to shoot the finals it was still a good Ultimate tournament to visit. I just hope that in the future Kagay-an the weather will finally cooperate so that everything (especially the game schedule) will go as planned. CDO has a lot to offer. Go give them a visit if you get a chance next year.

Congratulations to CGY Ninjas and to the CDO ultimate community as a whole for a job well done on bringing back the Kagay-an Ultimate Frisbee tournament! You finally brought the tournament back to life. Time to keep it alive for a long period of time.
