Huck O Hulyo 8 (July 15-16, 2017): Or Nothing At All

The 8th edition of Huck O Hulyo in Iloilo City has two sides of the coin this year. Huck 8, most definitely will be marked as one of the smallest Huck O Hulyo in 8 years. Thus, we only had our attention to those six teams and we saw a lot of potential players that will do great things in the next few years. (That is If they stay healthy and hungry). On the other side of the coin, it was also a perfect number of teams for me to keep the shooting on a very relax and stress-free weekend after the heavy coverage in WCBU 2017.

Rain. There's really nothing we can do about the rain every year. The rain always steals everyone's attention. Though we had two beautiful overcast ultimate days that weekend, the rain still came the moment the Championship game ended. And it came with an absolute bang. Everyone got stranded, so we really don't have any excuse not to finish all the drinks in the open bar. We all went home happy, and some of us didn't make it in the awarding ceremony.

For so many time in the history of Iloilo and Bacolod Ultimate scene, Panay Intensity (PI) and Team Kaiju (new team name, familiar faces still) faced off in the championship round of Huck O Hulyo 8. It's always fun to see these two young teams play against each other. PI started very strong, leading by five points and we all thought it's going to b a walk in the park for the Ilonggos and Ilonggas. But with patience and impressive attitude all throughout the game, the Bacolodnons worked their-selvess back up from the grave, tied the game, and gave us a heck of a championship battle under a heavy cloud full of rain. But like what they said, when it's your time, it's definitely your time. For the first time in 8 long years, Panay Intensity finally brought the trophy back home to Iloilo City.

With a variety of new players, present high flyers and seasoned veterans, it's always nice to see some old friends whom I haven't seen for quite a while. I think that was one of the reasons why Huck O Hulyo still lives on, whether there's 15 teams participating or only 6 busting their buns off, playing 5 games in Day 1 and additional two to three games in Day 2. In this busy world we live in, sometimes, It's not about the number of teams who will be out there playing for your tournament. Sometimes, it's all about how many of your close friends will show up and enjoy each others company for a very short time. Hats off to the organizers who never gave up. Though they didnt have that much time, they still manage to make it work this year. And that is so wonderful to see.

I was suppose to be covering a different event during the Huck O Hulyo weekend. I was hesitant to shoot Huck at first. But then again, I would never be where I am today without these kids. Without the Iloilo Ultimate Community who introduced me to Ultimate back in 2014. I don't think I would be able to have the opportunity to see more places in our country and photograph the best players in the world. Just like what Qhenjune did. After his phenomenal WCBU 2017 breakout performance On (and OFF) the fields of Royan, He can play on any team and go to any tournaments he wants around the country during that Huck weekend ,but still he chose to play with his home team. Huck was the tournament that I first witnessed him took flight. It's all about remembering where you came from. It's all about reminding yourself to always put your feet on the ground. It's all about thanking the people who help you mould yourself. It's all about your home team.... Or Nothing At All. Until then... More Images to Share. More Stories to Tell...
