What's Cookin'

For the past two weekends, Philippine Ultimate Images has been following the training of Pilipinas Ultimate (Team Pilipinas -TP) for Thailand Ultimate Frisbee Invitation 2022. This is the first time that Pilipinas Ultimate has assembled a national team to compete internationally since the ‘blip’, I mean the CoViD 19 boarder closures.

This version of the national team is, as I see it, a twist from the usual TP approach. To be fair, PFDA, PUA, Huck Rebellion, PULA and all those who organized the Ultimate community in the past had also done their best to reach this point, but the core of Pilipinas Ultimate, the recent PFDA boards and their immediate circle have finally laid foundations for a way of assembling a national that gives wider opportunities to players all over the country.

[Side Story]
There are local organizations and groups of people around the country who help the PFDA in supporting their local players get chances to be scouted by having local tournaments be sanctioned by PFDA or by supporting Pilipinas Ultimate organized national pool try outs in their area. Also supporting their players further by sponsorship or connecting them to local government units and sponsors.

I would compare this TP to a Pilipino dish, adobo sa gata with a spike of chillies. To cook this dish, we need the cooks. That’s the Pilipinas Ultimate and PFDA. We have Karen, Kenneth and X manning the kitchen this time (read our article last week: Behind the Stage ).

To cook this Pilipino Special with a twist, you need to first sauté your aromatics, the likes of Bolantoy, Quinjune, Pao Peralta, Jam Macaraeg, Gabbey Rodil and April Adalim. They are not the body of the dish –team, but they are a very strong and solid core as a base.

Then you add the body, your PROTEIN. Chicken, or pork, or both. Maybe tofu and veggies If you are vegetarian or vegan (Sorry I had to, haha). That’s Lala Cruz, ‘Master’ Lanz Agnes , Dongi Amor, Junie dela Cruz, Popoy Pascua, and Bea Martinez. They are simmered together to combine all the flavors.

Then you season it with your salt, pepper, other herbs and spices. Those are the combinations of Barack (Kent John Valenzuela) and Bagul (Gale Cornel) of Davao-Cotabato region; the young guns of NFDA, Felipe Diago, Angelli Luzuriaga and Sarag G (Jean) Rebusa; Carl Nayon of Bacolod; and the beach to grass standouts of Boracay, Caren Arban, Nonoy Sacapaño and Moi Taneo.

Lastly pour in the X (pun intended) factor, your Gata or Coconut milk to put everything together.

I know, you can almost taste how rich and delicious this dish is, but to give it more kick, it is spiked with a generous amount of chillies. The arduous boot camps, invited pool players and the ‘Dragon Balls’ gave this line up a surmountable challenge to say the least.

Finally, all I can say is, I’m thrilled to see the reaction of SouthEast Asia to what the Pinoys have been cooking.

[Shoutout]
For the second Bootcamp, Pilipinas ultimate is thankful to Wencie Guevarra trained as a pool player [also a dragon ball] but his biggest contribution is managing local logistics matters in Pampanga. He is also a local there. Lau Liwanag for the BnB. Chlods Manguerra for driving the Boracaynons, Bolantoy and Gabby to CDC Parade Grounds from Taguig and Christian Tio for driving them backPao Escaño for driving us, the QC gang and being there as Jam's moral crashpad. Migol Ramos Who isa also a Pool player, for supporting Bea and helping out with other logistics concerns including driving a bunch of players as well and Mai Dublin for being there as guiding figure for Boracaynons and other new members of the Team and the pool.
